1. Contrast the Chinese view of art with the European view with examples.

Ans : Chinese art puts emphasis on inner spiritual and conceptual view whereas European art puts an actual or figurative view. The Chinese view produces an actual view. On the other hand the European art is concerned with figurative painting.

 The European view draws a particular landscape exactly. On the other hand a Chinese painter does not choose a real landscape.

 European view does not want to take an active part in it's landscape. Whereas the Chinese painter requires the active participation of the viewer both physical and mental.


2. Explain the concept of 'Shanshui'.

Ans : 'Shanshui' is a spiritual concept. The internal meaning of 'Shanshui' is landscape. In Chinese it means mountain water. Together they represent two complementary poles. The mountain is 'Yang' which is vertically towards heaven . It is warm and dry. Water is 'Yan' which is feminine and horizontal. It is fluid, moist and cold. The latter is the receptive counterpart and both meets at a point called middle void. The middle void is the empty space where communication between them takes place. It is like the yogic concept of pranayama.


3. How did the painting on the wall, the brush and the artist all vanish ?

Ans : There lived a spirit in the cave opened. The painter entered the cave but the entrance closed behind him, and the painting on the wall, the brush and the artist himself all vanished. It is certainly done by the evil spirit.


4. How was Quinten able to marry the painter's daughter ?

Ans : Quinten went secretly in to the painter's studio. He painted a fly on the painter's latest painting and it looked so real that the painter wanted to fly it away. But when he knew that it was not real and painted by Quinten, as a result for his high efficiency he married his daughter to Quinten.


5. What do you understand by the 'outsider art' and 'art brut' or 'raw art'?

Ans : The outsider art is the art created by people who have no right to be artists as they haven't received any formal training, yet they show talent and artistic insights. The concept of outsider art was fulfilled by Nek Chand when he formed the Rock Garden and the sculptures. These sculptures were made out of recycled materials and 'Women by the waterfall' was considered to be the example of outsider art.

 Art brut or raw art is the art formed by people in their raw state as regards to cultural and artistic influence.


6. Who was the "Untutored genius who created a paradise" and what is the nature of his contribution to art ?

Ans : Nek Chand, an Indian hailing from Chandigarh took his style of raw art to an unimaginable level of excellence years ago he cleared a little part of jungle to make himself a garden. Sculptured with stones and recycled material. This became the renown "Rock Garden" of Chandigarh and Nek Chand is recognized as Indian biggest contributor to outsider art. He used everything from broken pieces of cups, bangles, tins and even rundown vehicles as material for his garden. He was the outstanding artist of that time. He has received honours and acclamations from the entire world for his work.


7. How has Nek Chand received international recognition ?

Ans : Nek Chand has stood as the most outstanding example of 'outsider art'. He created a paradise in the form of 'Rock Garden' in Chandigarh. The Swiss Commission of UNESCO and the governments of Italy, France, Belgium and Switzerland honoured him for his great work. An interactive show named 'Realism of Nek Chand' was held at all the leading museums of Europe.
