Dhemaji Covered With Flood

By - Nitu

Dhemaji, July 28th, 2023

The unseasonal rain that lashed Dhemaji during the last few days, has caused unforeseen hazards to its inhabitants. More than fifteen villages are lying submerged under the reeling waters of the mighty Brahmaputra. Fifty acres of cultivated lands, cattle, and homes have been washed away. Several embankments have breached giving way to the waters of the overflowing river. People are forced to abandon their homes and are seen seeking shelter in relief camps. The relief camps, however, are inadequately supplied with food, medicines, and other necessities.

Apart from the troubles at present, there looms a grave danger of the outbreak of several epidemics such as cholera, diarrhea, pneumonia, etc. The chief minister Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, paid a visit to the people via helicopter yesterday. But the pitiable conditions of the relief camps continue.

Local bodies and the union personnel have been deployed. There also has been the utilization of the CM's flood relief funds to the people. However, the fund itself doesn't seem quite adequate. As for the sufferers, their conditions are beyond the worst. Some immediate steps on the part of the government are required to let these people live until the flood water recedes.
