Ans : The lawyer is sent to the new Mullion to serve summons on Oliver Lutkins, who was needed as a witness in a law case.
He had expected the place to be a sweet and simple country village. Instead, the place new Mullion did not able to present a good impression on him. The streets were rivers of mud. The shops were rows of wooden and also they were either painted a sour brown or bare of any paint at all.
2. Who befriends him ? Where does he take him ?
Ans : The lawyer was befriend by a delivery man who introduced himself as Bill. He told him that he knew Lutkins and would help the lawyer in finding him.
He took him to all the places where Lutkins was known to hangout. He took the lawyer to Fritz's shop. Where Lutkins played a lot of poker, to Gustaff's barber shop then to Grey's barber shop, to the poolroom and several other places before finally taking him to Oliver's mother's farm. However, Lutkins was not found.
3. What does he say about Lutkins ?
Ans : Bill told the lawyer that Lutkins was a hard fellow to catch. He was always up to something or the other. He owed money to many people including Bill, and had never even paid anybody a cent. He also said that Lutkins played a lot of poker and was good at deceiving people.
4. What more does Bill about Lukins and his family ?
Ans : Bill told the lawyer that he knew Lutkins mother. He said that she was a terror. He narrated an incident when he took a trunk to her once and she almost took his skin off because he did not treat it like a box of eggs. He also said that she was about nine feet thick. she was very quick and could talk a lot.

Ans : no, the narrator or the young lawyer could not serve the summons that day. Because he could not recognise Lutkins at first. He thought that Lutkins and Bill were two different persons.

Ans : The hack driver himself was Oliver Lutkins, who introduced himself as Bill. He was a resident of new Mullion. He was about forty years old. His working clothes were dirty and well-worn. He had a friendly manner.

Lutkins befooled the lawyer badly with the assistance of his villagers. He played the trick on the lawyer with the help of his cleverness and convincing words. While taking the lawyer all over the village, Lutkins himself approached the people not the lawyer, he himself suggested the places to visit. He told the lawyer that he should not get off, as people might suspect him. He took the lawyer everywhere, spoke on behalf of him at Fritz's, at Gustaff's, at Gray's and even at Lutkins mother's farm. the way he talked to the mother and helped him that convinced the lawyer that man was really helping him. thus, Lutkins befooled the lawyer.
