Ans : Ausable is different from other secret agents in his appearance and behaviour. While secret agents are thought to be fit and mysterious. Ausable was fat and talked with an accent that could give him away

Ans : Fowler is a young writer who had come to meet Ausable.
His first authentic thrill of the day is when he follows Ausable into his room and discovers a man waiting for him with an automatic gun pointed his way.
3. How has Max got in ?
Ans : Max has got in by using a passkey to open the door.
4. How does Ausable say he got in ?
Ans : Ausable says Max had got in through the balcony. He says that last month too someone had taken advantage of the balcony to get into his room.
5. Who was the visitor who made a series of knocking ? What did he say to Ausable ?
Ans : The visitor who made a series of knocking was the waiter Henry.
The waiter stood in the doorway with a tray, a bottle and two glasses and said Ausable that he had ordered the drink when he returned.
6. How does Ausable manage to make Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room ?
Ans : Ausable was a secret agent. He was very clever and smart who lived in a gloomy French hotel. Max was another secret agent whom he met in his room. In their conversation, Ausable says that this is for the second time in a month that somebody got into his room through the balcony belonged to the next apartment. He also narrated that the room used to be part of a large unit and the next room used to be the living room. The balcony extended under his window and somebody entered his room through that. His manner of speaking and the confidence in relating details of the balcony all go towards making Max believe that there is a balcony attached to his room.
7. Briefly describe how Ausable defeated Max's scheme to take away the report.
Ans : Ausable was a secret agent and he met another secret agent named Max in his room, who come to collect important report concerning some new missiles. To save from Max, Ausable invented a story and informed the false information of the balcony and also suspected Max in entering his room by the balcony. As the conversation was going on, there was a knocking on the door. Ausable informed about the knocking as a police officer whom he expected to some extra protection for the report and whether everything was alright. When the knocking increased and the doorknob turned then Max jumped down from the window. That is how Ausable defeated Max's scheme to take away the report.
8. Give a description of Max's conversation with Ausable.
Ans : Ausable, a secret agent met another secret agent named Max in his room, holding a pistol in his hand. He had a conversation with Max, who came to collect the important report concerning some new missiles. Ausable made a story because he wanted to buy time. Ausable told Max it was for the second time in a month that somebody got into his room through the balcony. He said that the balcony belonged to the next apartment. He also said that the room used to be a part of a large unit and the next to the living room. But it was extended under the window of his room. The management of the hotel had promised to block it off. When there was knocking on the door, Max become afraid as Ausable told him that police might come to his room. So, without noticing the balcony Max jumped through the window and that was his end. Ausable's presence of mind helped him in getting rid of Max.
9. Who is Fowler ? Give a description of his meeting with Ausable ?
Ans : Fowler was a young writer who was interested to know about the life of a secret agent and was curious to discover them.
Fowler wanted to meet Ausable to cover him up his writing. He imagined that he would be thrilled when he will meet him but he was disappointed because Ausable did not fit any kind of a secret agent. However, he had his first authentic thrill of the day when he come across the room, Max was pointing his gun towards them. In that night, Fowler had experienced the real thriller of a secret agent when Ausable misled Max by informing him about the false balcony and saved the important report from Max's hand.
These were the events that occured when Fowler met Ausable.
