1. What is Magh Bihu or Maghar Domahi?

Ans: Magh Bihu or Maghor Domahi is a festival of feasting. It is celebrated on the junction of the Assamese month "Puh" and "Magh". At this point, in the time the granaries are filled with harvest and people celebrate the bihu with various food items. So, it is also known as Bhogali Bihu.

2. What is Uruka?

Ans: The Bihu eve is known as Uruka. Uruka in lower Assam is celebrated on the last day of the Assamese month 'Puh'. Assamese people celebrate Uruka with different festive items.

Assamese people make their kitchen rich with rice, curry, fish, and meat. Community fishing is another aspect of Uruka. people gather dry firewood for the night. Young cowherds pass the Uruka night at Bhelaghar.

3. How is the Meji made?

Ans: Meji is a temple-like structure built on the field. It is made out of green bamboo, dried banana leaves, and hay. Usually, young lads put a hand in it.

They steal vegetables from the villager's firm to eat at the Bhelaghar and edibles are offered to them.

5. How is the delicacy of prepared 'Sungapitha'?

Ans: Sungapitha is a special traditional food item during Magh Bihu. It is prepared with moist rice powder put in a green bamboo tube and roasted in fire. Salt is mixed with the rice powder and some people prefer a sweet variety in it.

6. What is tekeli pitha?

Ans: Tekeli Pitha is a special food item during magh bihu in which salted rice powder is steamed in the mouth of a small pitcher or even a kettle. It is a kind of idli but large in size.

7. How is Mah Karai prepared?

Ans: Mah-karai is a special preparation of magh bihu. It is a combination of roasted rice, black gram, sesame, and pieces of ginger and before chewing it is smeared with oil.

8. What are the different sports and games of 'Magh-Bihu'?

Ans: The traditional sports and games take place on Bihu day as a part of its celebration. sports like wrestling, running, jumping, buffalo fighting, egg fighting, etc. take place. In ancient times games like swordplay and Javelin throwing were practiced during the Magh Bihu.

Ans: Magh Bihu or Maghor Domahi is a post-harvesting festival of Assam and mainly of lower Assam. it is celebrated in Assam on the junction of the Assamese months 'Puh' and 'Magh'. It is a festival of feasting and merry-making.

The Bihu eve is known as 'URUKA'. The Assamese people make their kitchen rich with different food items. The women folk get ready for the Bihu on the Uruka day.

They prepare delicious food items like Chira-pitha-laru-curd for the Bihu day. the Uruka is not a day affair. people collect fire, wood, and fuel for a month. Community fishing on the bheels and ponds is too common on the Uruka day. People gather some meat for feasting.

Assamese people do not take their usual lunch on the Bihu day like rice and curry. instead, they take chira-pitha-laru-curd, etc. for lunch. Some special preparations like Mah-Karai, tekeli-pitha, sunga-pitha, and sunga-saul(in upper Assam) are made for the bihu celebration.

The tribal women prepare rice-bear for the same. The different food items on the Bihu occasion have a special attraction for the Assamese people.

Magh Bihu is a communal affair too. Young boys make Meji and Bhelaghar in the field. The villagers on the Bihu morning gathered around the Meji. The people pray to the fire god 'Agni' singing the hymns. The elderly villagers do 'Naam-Prasanga' by sitting near the meji which is a reflection of Vaishnavism. The Brahmins or the elder villagers bless the younger people or the other present.

Traditional sports like racing, jumping, weight lifting, javelin throwing, and swordplay are played during the Magh Bihu. buffalo and cock-fighting are arranged at different parts of Assam. In short, the Magh Bihu is filled with joy and merriment for the Assamese people.

10. Why is Magh Bihu known as Bhogali Bihu?

Ans: Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is a festival of feast and merriment. It comes from the word 'BHOG' which means eating and enjoyment. It is related to the harvesting season. The greeneries are filled with a harvest that brings enough feasting and eating to the people after a long striving.

11. How is Kati Bihu celebrated in Assam?

Ans: Kati bihu or Kongali bihu has a different flavor from that of Bhogali and Rongali bihu. It is called 'Kongali Bihu' as the greeneries are almost empty during the season. On this Bihu people light earthen lamps in front of the 'Tulsi' Plant. There is no merriment and feasting on this Bihu because of loney striving during the summer.
