Ans: Dr. Sadao Hoki met Hana accidentally in an American professor's house. He was attracted by her but he had to wait to give his consent. When he knew that Hana was also Japanese, he fell in love with her. This led them to get married. Their marriage was arranged in the old Japanese way.

Ans: The general was sick and knew that Sadao was indispensable to him. He did not want Sadao to be arrested and anything bad to happen to Dr. Sadao.

Ans: When Dr. Sadao and his wife stood out looking at the sea, they saw something black coming out of the sea. It seemed to be a man crawling on his hands and knees. He was lying wounded, motionless on the sand.

Ans: On seeing the wounded man Dr. Sadao and Hana were at a loss. Dr. Sadao saw a bullet wound on the right side of the man, Tom. tom was bleeding. That made Hana sad and she cried. Then both Dr. Sadao and Hana thought about what they should do with the wounded man. Had he not been wounded, they would have put him in the sea. but there was only one thing to be done that is to carry him into their house.
11. How did Hana help Sadao in operating the wounded prisoner of war?
Ans: Hana dipped a small clean towel and washed the prisoner's face carefully. Sadao went there with his emergency bag of surgery. He asked Hana to give the anesthetic to the soldier. Accordingly, the bullet was out and the operation was successful.

Ans: Dr. Sadao gave shelter to a prisoner of war who was wounded and dying. The prisoner of war was an enemy soldier. He was a white American. Dr. Sadao Hoki as a doctor cured him and helped him in his escape. Had the prisoner been healthy, Dr. Sadao would have handed him to the police. But human consideration overweight all other patty things in his respect.
13. How did the general react when Dr. Sadao inform him about the prisoner of war?
Ans: When Dr. Sadao informed the general about the prisoner of war, his behavior was quite surprising. His personal considerations overweighed all other considerations. He did not order the immediate arrest of the enemy soldier nor did he take any action against Dr. Sadao who had given shelter to an American soldier. He only offered to send a private killer to get him killed secretly. In short, he did not want Dr. Sadao to be in the puzzle for his own interest.
14. Justify the title of the story THE ENEMY.
Ans: The title of the story THE ENEMY by real S. Buck is suitable. It is quite appropriate and logical. The wounded American prisoner is their natural enemy and Dr. Sadao and Hana should have handed him over to the police. But human consideration over weighted all other considerations. It is the duty of a doctor that made Dr. Sadao save the life of even a dying enemy.
15. Why did the servants(Yumi) leave or desert Dr. Sadao Hoki's house?
Ans: The servants of Dr. Sadao Hoki deserted his family when they discovered that an enemy soldier was taking shelter in Sadao's house. Yumi and the others feared that their master would prove as a traitor. Staying in America for a long time they have forgotten to think of their own country. So they left Dr. Sadao's house before facing any trouble.
16. Why did the messenger come to Dr. Sadao? What did Hana think about it?
Ans: The messenger came to Dr. Sadao Hoki to inform him about the old general's pain. The old general was again in pain and wanted to see Dr. Sadao Hoki.
Hana, after seeing the messenger thought that their secret of sheltering an enemy soldier has come to light. So, the messenger came to inform us about their arrest or something like that.
17. How was Sadao's father a traditional and conventional man?
Ans: Sadao's father was a true Japanese in sense and color. He tried to prove himself as a true Japanese. Even the furniture of his room was of Japanese style and the other things too. He did not accept Hana as a daughter-in-law until he confirmed her origin. He arranged Dr. Sadao and Hana's marriage in the old Japanese way after returning from America.
18. Write a character sketch of Dr. Sadao as depicted in your lesson 'The Enemy'.
Ans: Dr. Sadao was the only son of his father. His education was his father's chief concern. For this reason, he was sent to America to study surgery and medicine at the age of 22. He married Hana when he knew that she was also Japanese, Dr. Sadao was very serious regarding his castle and Creed was a true patriot.
One day Dr. Sadao and Hana found a wounded white man on a Japanese coast in front of their home. For them, the white Americans were their enemy as Japan was at war with America. So, Dr. Sadao and his wife couldn't decide for a while whether to save the man's life or throw him back into the sea. They fear that the police would arrest them if they shelter a white man in their house. But his conscience urged him to shelter the man or else he would surely die. In short, Dr. Sadao saved that man for the sake of humanity.
Dr. Sadao also faced the displeasure of their servants. They even left him for sheltering the man. But Dr. Sadao ignored all these warnings. He heard the call of his conscience.
Dr. Sadao's heart overflowed with human kindness. He made all arrangements for the prisoner's escape. He put his life in danger to save the life of an enemy. He was a human in the true sense. his hatred and enmity for white Americans couldn't change his human considerations.
19. Why did Yumi refuse to wash the prisoner of war?
Ans: Yumi refused to wash the prisoner of war out of fear and not superstition as he was an American soldier. For her, it was unpatriotic to help an American soldier and she would be a traitor.
20. Hana told Yumi to wash the soldier. How did Yumi react?
Ans: Hana told Yumi to wash the soldier. But when Yumi saw the white man, she shook with anger. She had a fierce resistance and left the room without washing him as he was an American soldier.
21. Describe the difficulties faced by Dr. Sadao when he tried to help the enemy soldier.
Ans: Dr. Sadao found an American prisoner of war washed ashore in a dying state. He at first couldn't make sure whether he should save him as a doctor or hand him over to the police as Japan was at war with America. If he had sheltered the man, he would have been arrested but if he had left him alone, he would have surely died. He even thought of throwing the man back into the sea. But his consciousness compelled him to shelter the man and he did his duty as a doctor.
Dr. Sadao and his wife faced stiff resistance from the servants. their servants were frightened and angry and finally left him. but the ethics of his profession made him save a dying enemy.
